Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
