Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Position.

Initially, this album might appear more like a challenging scholarly examination than a new pop project from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Split into four separate parts and voiced in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, often by way of the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched upwards here, carried by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the efforts of other artists seem quite modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, and complete praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the stakes feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth clearly on a stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes down like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never quite understand—nor want to predict—what it is going next."

Nearly each track finishes at a totally distinct point from where it began. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic style starts off moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album is straddling the gap of radical innovation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies as it spins skyward. That trick gets repeated on another powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of buried gems that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
