New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
