A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
