Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
Global terror listing and prosecution case
Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.
Historical background and group hierarchy
Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
